Crabs, lobsters, and other crustaceans feel pain — a fact now supported by a solid body of scientific research worldwide. Yet in Ontario, they are not protected under the Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) Act, leaving them vulnerable to inhumane treatment in food (like being boiled alive) , transport, and storage systems.

We  care! We’ve launched a petition calling on the Ontario government to recognize the sentience of crustaceans and include them under the PAWS Act. With the support of MPP Catherine McKenney, the petition will be formally submitted to the Ontario Legislature this fall.

Other jurisdictions — including Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand — have already taken steps to protect crustaceans in light of the evidence. It’s time for Ontario to follow suit.

So far, over 1,000 people have signed — and there’s still time to add your voice. Help us show there is public support for basic protections for these often-overlooked animals.
